Wrought iron bracket from Large Louis XIV period

From the second period of the reign of Louis XIV, this large bracket is beautifully balanced. A broad curve connects the vertical post to the horizontal one, whilst the volutes complete this feature. Corolla shaped foilage falls from the centre and ends in a “pig’s tail”. Beautiful wrought iron feature from the period and in the style of Louis XIV, which subtly highlights the achievements of the Regence style.

An antique fireback with Minerva, 18th century

Antique fireback from the late 18th century decorated with Minerva. A similar plaque appears in Henri Carpentier's book, "Les plaques de chimées" and is reported as part of the Nicora collection in Paris. Unlike the fireback of the Nicora collection, ours has a key motif and a pair of scissors on both sides of Minerva.

This beautiful fireback was made in the 18th century Squared shape with a semi circle pediment, this fireback is adorned with a typical Louis XV style decoration composed of acanthus leaves, flowers and shell scrolls, framing a woman bust dressed with a ancient tunique and a flowers crown on her hair.

Napoléon III firescreen in gilt bronze with a dancer

This firescreen was made of gilt bronze in the second half of the 19th century. It depicts an eclectic decoration, typical of the taste under the Second Empire mixing the decorative motifs of the Louis XV and Louis XVI styles. Indeed, the first style is illustrated by the presence of many acanthus leaves scrolls, while the laurel crowns and the covered vases are characteristic of the second one. The center of our firescreen also receives a medallion in which a beautiful and young dancer is represented dresses with an antique drapery.

Cast iron fireback with village life scene

Made of cast iron, this fireback is decorated with a scene of village life. In the centre, two men are sitting facing each other and drinking from glasses. Another figure is sitting next to them, his head resting on the table. A young woman is standing behind one of the figures sitting at the table, putting her hands on his shoulders. Another man is standing back from the stage. The setting is a forest setting.

Pair of andirons with faces

These two high andirons are crowned with a small capital and faces carved in low-relief. These are extended by a long neck that flares out towards the base and widens further before falling back onto two feet separated by two arches.

Fountain with Dolphins, 19th century

This stone fountain was crafted in the 19th century. It unfolds over three levels: the first consists of an oblong basin adorned with inverted flutes. The second, made of two intertwined dolphins resting on their heads, forms a column. Finally, the third, a smaller basin, is decorated with two heads of children surrounded by ears of corn and reeds, from whose open mouths water cascades from the highest basin into the first. The crossed-out stone support shown in the photo is not available with the fountain.

E. CLAVIER, Andirons with Eurasian Eagle-Owls, 1867 World's Fair

This bronze andiron bar was presented at the 1867 Paris Exhibition in Paris and was crafted by the skilled bronzeworker E. Clavier. This piece is a testament to the artistry of E. Clavier, a talented bronzeworker whose name first appeared in commercial almanacs in 1852 as an “ornamental sculptor for bronze” based in the Marais district of Paris. From the inception of his workshop, Clavier specialized in fireplace accessories such as andirons, fenders, fire guards, shovels, and tongs. He won several medals at the World Fairs of 1855, 1862, and 1867, showcasing the bronze piece we present here at the latter event in Paris. The workshop later became Maison Bouhon Frères, under the direction of Thomas and Joseph Bouhon, and continued as Bouhon et Cie until 1898. The central bar connects two andirons crowned by majestic Eurasian eagle-owls. The owls stand upright, their sharp talons gripping two intertwined serpents facing each other with exposed, menacing fangs. The hostility expressed by the serpents contrasts with the noble stillness of the raptors. The design demonstrates a masterful sense of composition and balance: the imposing bodies of the nocturnal birds rest firmly on the sinuous forms of the serpents. The stylized curves of the serpents enhance the decorative quality of the andirons, further emphasized by the silvered patina of the bronze, which displays a rich array of nuanced tones. The craftsmanship is remarkable, with every detail finely chiseled to the point that the texture of the animals’ bodies becomes almost tangible.

Bronze helmet spark arrester, 19th century

This bronze spark arrester was made around 1880. Inside an architectural structure chiseled with volutes and leaves, a scalloped outline holds the screen of the fire arrester. The mesh, which is original and decorated with gridded and interspersed patterns, has a slight accident. The bronze piece is supported on either side by two column-shaped feet ending in four snail-shaped branches. On each column culminates a medieval helmet with a beautiful plume in the spirit of Théodore Gechter, a famous sculptor and bronze-worker of the first half of the century. Under the top of the breastplate, we can make out two laurel branches and a coat of arms decorated with a band and a point. Indeed, at the beginning of the 19th century, artists rediscovered the Middle Ages, a period until then totally set aside in favor of Antiquity. This bronze piece bears witness to this newfound taste for medieval themes.
