Sculpted oak mantel piece in the hooded Neo-Renaissance style, with a beautiful patina.
The powerful fully decorated jambs rise up to deeply curved modillions topped with dentils. The frieze above is a virtuoso piece of sculpture : at the center a nude lady rests upon a cornucopia in an oval braided frame flanked by a pair of winged sphinxes. The very long shapes of the creatures are similar to those of the school of Fontainebleau of the 16th century.
The hood is soberly decorated: thin vertical lines rise up to a classical cornice, a simple carved out diamond with a flower motif inside is the only decorative motif. The same floral diamond shape is repeated on the sides.
The female sphinx is an imaginary animal that was much appreciated in the 19th century especially in the Empire and Neo-Renaissance styles.
