Pair of 19th century Neo-Renaissance style carved oak mantels with 17th century walnut wood elements. High relief sculptures of sheathed seraphim stand like pilasters against the jambs. A cornice decorated with deeply rounded gadroons supports the highly ornate entablature. A pair of tritons, one female one male, flank the frieze. These could represent the god Triton son of Poseidon and Amphitrite and his sister Rhode. They are carved in relief, with a particular attention to the scales of their tails, their muscles and their facial expression, which is typical of 17th century work. The frieze with a delicately carved frame of curlicue foliage, is adorned with three cartouches of floral scrolls. This play of scrolls and curlicue motifs is typical of the Renaissance, as is the taste for complex sculpture though which artists could show their skills.
