France 19th century
Rare walnut wood mantel from the 19th century in the Neo-Renaissance style with a highly ornate facade. A pair of spiral columns rise up to foliage covered capitals that support the mantel. The hearth opening is underlined by rounded molding that runs up both sides and meets in the middle, rolling up into acanthus leaves. A recessed lattice work panel fills the flatten arch below the entablature. On either side, grotesques - a favorite Renaissance feature - fill the spandrels. The entablature is elaborately carved with, in the center, a cabochon - another typical early Renaissance element - flanked by grotesques. This theme is magnified in the hood above, where another larger cabochon is set among curlicue foliage. The composition is crowned by an impressive cornice.
