Main gate with 100 linear feet of railing

Napoleon III iron main gate and fence, for a large proprety. Wrought iron posts decorated with volutes surround the gate. The vertical rods are topped with pikes of different sizes. These gates came from a very large property and were built in Saint Amand Les Eaux (in the North of France) in the second half of the 19th century for the marriage of a brewer's daughter to a Russian aristocrat, a descendant of the Nicolov family.

Extraordinary monumental fireplace signed by Jules Allard and Louis Ardisson coming from the Berwind Estate, Fifth Avenue, New York

This extraordinary monumental fireplace was made out of Breche violette marble , Carrara Statuary marble , gilded bronze and green patina bronze. It was designed by Jules Allard for the Manhattan residence of Edward Julius Berwind, 828 Fifth Avenue, New York City, in 1894. Sculptures were realized by Louis Ardisson , french sculptor. The large low-relief representating the “Triumph of Neptune” is signed by both Allard and Ardisson : « J ALLARD ET SES FILS/INV » and « LOUIS ARDISSON FECIT ». A pair of gilded winged putti bearing Edward Julius Berwind’s monogrammed cartouche surmounts the overmantel, composed of an architectural frame molded with a copper-colored egg-and-dart friezes. This frame encloses a low-relief feature carved out of Statuary Carrara marble by Louis Ardisson featuring Neptune, surrounded by Nereids, dolphins and winged putti. The fireplace features a molded rectangular entablature adorned with a Statuary Carrara marble frieze also carved by Louis Ardisson , a winter allegory featuring putti and sleeping hounds, in a bronze frame that runs down on either side of the hearth. The mantel is flanked by a male Atlant and a female caryatid , with green-patinated bronze skin, hooded and draped in gilded bronze lion-pelts. They are exceptional by their monumental statue and quality achievement. When Edward J. Berwind moved to New York, he bought a large land on which he built in 1894 a sublime mansion at the corner of Fifth Avenue and 64th Street, only a few blocs away from Central Park and many wealthy neighbors such as William K. Vanderbilt, Cornelius Vanderbilt II, and Mrs. William B. Astor. For the interior decoration of this luxurious estate, he hires the famous decorator Jules Allard , a French established in the US in 1885. Jules Allard was then at the height of its fame : in collaboration with architect Richard Morris Hunt, he works for the wealthiest families of the East Coast of the United States, like the Vanderbilts. Thus he realized the decor of "Marble House", the summer residence of William Kissam Vanderbilt and his wife Alva in Newport, Rhose Island. Delighted with Allard's work, Edward J. Berwind hired him again in 1901 for the important decoration of his wonderful estate in Newport, "The Elms".

Exceptional large clock with the Fô dogs

Brown patina bronze, the base in Red Griotte marble. This magnificent clock was made in France around 1880 out of authentically Chinese bronzes. Two large Foo Dogs, made in China at the start of the 19th century, stand on their hind legs, and support the pendulum with their forelimbs. The pendulum mechanism sits inside a Chinese bronze vase that was specifically cut at its base and reused to make up the body of this clock. It is decorated all over its surface with engraved ornaments. Two dragons carved in relief are placed on the front of this vase and surround the clock's dial. On the back, there is a cockerel with its wings spread, with its head carved in relief. The extremely high quality bronze and the very skilful use of composition makes this clock very original. This clock is typical of a technique that was popular towards the end of the 19th century, which derived from a profound taste in the Far East. This technique involved reusing authentically Chinese elements on European designed objects, which were intended to be used on the most luxurious interiors. The clock's magnificence makes us reflect on the fact that it was made by a true amateur of Chinese Art. The dial's numerals are made out of enamel and are true Chinese numerals. The clock hands feature a dragon which is the result of excellent chiselling skill. These different elements are of French craftsmanship, as is the pendulum featuring an animal with tentacles. The pendulum is signed “ L.M et Cie, Médaille de bronze” (L.M and Cie, Bronze Medal), which confirms that it is off French craftsmanship and was made around 1880.

Gabriel VIARDOT (attr. to) - Japanese trumeau with a demon head

This very beautiful Japanese trumeau was made of tainted sycamore in the late 19th century very likely by the French specialist of the Japonisme, the furniture maker Gabriel Viardot (1830-1904). Thus he imagines here a mirror framed by a blacken wood frieze with leaves sculpted in bas-relief, surmounted by a curved pediment with steps and open worked Japanese motif. Also adorne on its center with a projecting demon's head. The furniture maker became famous from the 1870 with his production of furniture inspired by the Asiatic ones, of which he makes his specialty. He takes his inspiration from the 1867 Worlds's Fair where Japan participates for the first time. His very characteristic furniture production was sometimes inlaid with Tonkin mother-of-pearl as it is the case on our display case, but always made with tinted sycamore wood.

Fireback depicting saint Hubert in the forest

This fireback was made of cast iron in the 19th century. It is adorned with a scene depicting saint Hubert. Born in the French nobility, they say he was so passionate about hunting that he forgets his duties. One day that he pursuing a stag in the forest, he heard : "Hubert ! Until when are you going to pursue beasts in the forest ? Until when does this vain passion will make you forget the salvation of your soul ? ". As he was kneeling, the voice keeps going "Go to Lambert, my bishop, in Maastricht and convert yourself." Hubert is in the majort part depicting kneeling in front of a drag with a cross above its head as we can see on our fireback.

Large Regency-style mantel richly carved in violet breche marble

This Regency style fireplace was made in the late 19th century in violet breche marble. In the center of the lintel, it is decorated with a complex motif: in the center, a flower with regular petals, framed by a heart-shaped pattern holding hanging leaves, itself surrounded by foliage. On both sides, characteristic patterns of the rocaille style and plant scrolls increase its size. Moldings adorn the sides of the lintel following the lines of the mantelpiece, but are interrupted symmetrically by two small circles. The jambs follow a slight curve and are decorated with a simple molding. Hot-air vents are on each side of the mantelpiece.

This wooden overmantel is from the Louis XV period. It is composed of several frames, including a mirror, a painting, and sconces. The frame of the mirror is adorned with numerous leaves and small flowers, forming a symmetrical design. At the top center of the mirror is a shell surrounded by numerous small volutes. The presence of the shell changes the direction of the frame's lines, creating curves and counter-curves. This frame is attached to the painting frame by two links. The frame of the painting uses the same motifs as the one below, but this time the top is adorned with a palmette surrounded by numerous flowers and curved lines of acanthus leaves and shells. This frame surrounds a painting of four putti forging arrows in a cave. On the overmantel are two symmetrical sconces, created from the leaf motifs of the frames. These sconces are framed by moldings that end in scrolls. At the bottom of the moldings, bouquets emerge from shells. At the top are shells from which a waterfall of three flowers emerges.

This Louis XVI-style fireplace with half-columns is sculpted in Arabescato marble. Arabescato marble is a white marble with gray or black veins. It is one of the white marbles of Carrara, and its main quarries are located in the Carrara basin in Italy, at Seravezza Lucca. The band of the fireplace is simple, adorned only in moldings. The console part of the legs is decorated with acanthus leaves, as are the Corinthian capitals. Below this capital, the shaft of the half-column is fluted and tapers to the base. The fluting is varied, first hollow and then curved. This fireplace is accompanied by its cast-iron interior, also in the Louis XVI style, with its crown of bows and ribbons mixed with two spears. The presence of ribbon motifs and motifs borrowed from Greek Antiquity allows us to qualify this fireplace as Louis XVI-style.

This Carrara marble fireplace is in the Louis XVI style, blending motifs from nature with motifs from Ancient Greece. On the band of the fireplace, branches of laurel leaves crisscross in a regular pattern, forming a frieze of geometrical motifs. In the center of the frieze, the branches are tied together with ribbons. The console part of the leg is decorated with acanthus leaves placed vertically like the capital of a Greek column.
