Delphin MASSIER (1836-1907) - Important Orientalist style earthenware planter

This important Orientalist earthenware planter was made around 1880 in the workshops of Delphin Massier, a member of the Massier family which was a dynasty of ceramists established since the 17th century in Vallauris. It consists of a large earthenware vase on a base with four columns adorned with muquarnas and covered with a floral and abstract Oriental ornamentation. The blue tones are both characteristic of the Massier production and of the Orientalism, especially in the field of ceramics. The pottery family tradition began with Pierre Massier (1707-1748) then with Jacques Massier (1806-1871) who gave to the workshop a new lease of life. Indeed, their factory, which was at first a simple workshop with an utilitarian vocation, stood out from the local production tanks to an innovative and artistic production. In Vallauris they introduced an art ceramic, notably thanks to the arrival of the Italian potter Gondolfi Gaetano in 1859, who initiated Delphin and his brother Clément (1844-1917) to numerous practices such as plaster molds and enamelled earthenware decoration techniques. The glory of the Massier family peaked at the turn of the century with Delphin and Clément and their cousin Jerome and son (1830-1916), son of Jerome (1820-1909). Both art ceramists and entrepreneurs, the Massiers had also made themselves known thanks to their elaborate sales catalogs which give us today a way to appreciate the diversity of their productions and to identify their models. The ceramicists family had built its reputation thanks to their ability to innovate (they developed several techniques) and because their productions were inspired by the important trends of the period. The Massiers, who played a certain role in the revival of the decorative arts, are very representative of the characteristic wealth of the 19th century. Thus, if their first realizations were inspired by historicism and eclecticism, Jerome and Delphin will devote themselves later to an Art Nouveau style production. Our planter is inspired by Orientalism, surely one of the greatest artistic movement of the 19th century which inspired the Massier for many creations as we can see in their catalogs where we can also find several similar planters to the one we present. Otherwise, one of the most prestigious realizations of Clément Massier is this planter constitued with a base, almost identical to ours, and a bowl. It is called Large Persian bowl with four columns base, whose one copy is preserved at the Vallauris Museum. Among Orientalism, Moorish Spain is one of the decorators lands of preference which gave them the turquoise blue for example. The Massiers, which developed an important taste for colors, will make green and red, but especially blue, and more precisely peacock blue, like the color of our planter, inspired by the Hispano-Moorish art, their favourite colors. The Massiers collaborated with great artists of their time such as Lévy-Dhurmer, Dominique Zumbo and their talent will be rewarded for example at the Paris World Fair in 1889 where Clement received a gold medal. They acquired an international reputation thanks to competitions and exhibitions in which they participated and had among their clients Victor Hugo or Emile Zola. This beautiful planter, with its exceptional large dimensions, its rich polychrome and its abstract and floral ornamentation, reflects both the taste for the Orient and the production of the Massier family, surely the most known dynasty of ceramists of the 19th century.

Jambs with lions’s paws, typical of the Napoleon III style, are adorned with large leaves which drop down. They support a frieze decorated at its ends with naturalistic rosettes inspired by the Louis XVI style. This fireplace, imposing and elegant, has important dimensions.

Paul SOYER, Bronze, Gilded Bronze and Enameled Clock, circa 1860

This mantel clock is made in bronze and highly decorated with enamels painted in “grisaille”. Two patinas of bronze bring life and color to the frame, which - as was regularly the case for mid 19th century mantel clocks - is built like a miniature architectural Renaissance structure. The body has a square base, with columns on every corner that rise to composite order capitals, with a mixture of styles that is characteristic of 19th century art. The columns are linked together by gilded bronze round arches populated by Chimaera, mythological creatures. Above, the gilded bronzes are adorned with dark bronze ram heads, a motif borrowed from Antiquity and very popular in the 19th century, especially for furniture and decorative bronze pieces. Enamel is everywhere, painted in grisaille and enhanced with gold, displaying a lush decor of foliage, grotesques and curlicue. Below the clock face, two tapered putti flank a vase brimming with fruit. The sides are adorned with full length portraits of a gentleman and a lady. The man is dressed in the style of the characters in Rembrandt’s The Night Watch, painted in 1642. The lady plays a mandolin, which was imported to France from Italy in the 15th century. The Musée d’Orsay in Paris has recently acquired from Paul Soyer’s descendants an almost identical mantel clock to the one presented here. (OAO 1787) According to museum sources, this clock was presented at the World’s Fair in Philadelphia in 1876. Born in the Seine-et-Marne region, Paul Soyer began his carreer as a chisel artist, in Paris, in the 1850’s. He progressively learned the art of enameling and opened his own studio in 1861, rue Mauconseil between the Halles and Bonne-Nouvelle neighborhoods. He collaborated with well know artists like Claudius Popelin, Charles Duron and Gustace Baugrand. Working with the latter, he was awarded a bronze medal at the World’s fair in 1867. He then opened a larger workshop Rue Saint Sauveur and specialized in different enamel techniques with a preference for painted enamels. His very varied production, went from small pieces for jewellery, enameled objects for goldsmiths, plates for cabinet makers, to large portraits. A follower of Popelin, he remained faithful to the art of the late Renaissance, with a preference for a polychrome enamel technique, which associated grisaille and gold camaïeu. He participated in all the French and Foreign World’s Fairs, to the Union Centrale de Beaux-Arts appliqués à l’Industrie exhibits. Often rewarded, particularly with a gold medal in 1878, he was considered beyond competition and member of the jury in 1889, when he received the Légion d’Honneur.

"Niobe", alabaster statue after an original greek statue

Daughter of the king of Lydia, Tantalus, Niobe is reputed to have brought many children into the world, the Niobids. Vanityous, she dared to mock the goddess Leto, who had given birth to only two children, Apollo and Artemis. The revenge was terrible for the latter were charged by their mother to kill the Niobids. It is said that one of the girls, saved by her mother, escaped the massacre, but she retained a deadly pallor: it is this scene which is represented here in this alabaster sculpture of extreme whiteness.

This wood and stucco overmantel with polychromatic decoration was made in the second half of the 19th century. It is composed of a painted in red frame showing Louis XV decorative elements in stucco painted in gold, such as the stylized shell flanked by acanthus leaves accompanied with flowers garlands in the corners. The mirror is framed with a gilt frame risen with a painted in green ribbon.

Rare pair of cast iron andirons shaped as a laying dog, Wallonia, 16th century

Product of the popular figurative art of Wallonia, this pair of andirons made in the 16th century in cast iron shows a naive beauty but is also a testimony of some kind of aesthetic concerns. Made in a zoomorphic shape, the Musée Gaumais, where a similar pair is preserved, describes them as a representation of laying dogs. However, our andirons shows distinctly the representation of hair all around the neck suggesting a mane. Furthermore the representation of the head can also lets us think that a lion is represented instead of a dog. The author of those andirons didn't only give a shape to their visible parts. Indeed the back shows as much precised details with the add of a relief scroll on each side, in which we can see a stylization of the back legs. Also, a small ornamental bolection was added on the andiron's body. It's a very certain inventive spirit, a dexterity but also a sensitivity that the popular art in Wallonia expresses through this pair of andirons. The Wallonia is a French speaking region of the Belgium's south. It is famous for its medieval cities and its Renaissance architecture. Nevertheless, we can't find a real stylistic unity in the region because of the neighbors variety and sometimes the different influences from the outside, without saying the individualism. In olden days, we could count simultaneously and on a very small area, subjects of the Liège Prince-Archbishop, Limbourg or Luxembourg Duke, Prince-Abbot of Stavelot-Malmedy, Namur or Hainaut Count, either independent or under the Burgundian, Spanish, Austrian or French tutelage. This historic past that has divided the actual Wallonia into divided political territories, sometimes rivals, can also explains this dispersal.

Théodore DECK, Decorative Dish in Glazed Ceramic with Tulips

Théodore Deck, Decorative Dish in Glazed Ceramic with Tulips This decorative plate with tulips was created by the ceramist Théodore Deck at the end of the 19th century. Théodore Deck initially trained in the stove-making industry. When he established himself in Paris in 1858, he manufactured stove coverings. Buoyed by his success, he then ventured into ceramics. His workshop created numerous plates, sometimes in collaboration with recognized painters. He gradually perfected his technique and achieved significant success at the many Universal Exhibitions he participated in. In 1878, he was made an Officer of the Legion of Honour. He directed the Sèvres manufactory from 1887 until his death in 1891. Against a vivid yellow-orange background adorned with lightly embossed decorations, two tulip flowers stand out, one white and one violet. In the background, a shrub with orange flowers transitions with the colorful background of the plate. The bluish greens of the stems and leaves complement the bright tones of the flowers. This work reflects the fashion of Japonism that swept through European art from the 1870s to the early years of the 20th century, which particularly influenced Théodore Deck, a collector of East Asian art.
