Antique oak mantel from the 19th century

Large oak fireplace made during the early nineteenth century. Two slender jambs, decorated with half columns, support a wide entablature. A marble Red Griotte inlay is placed in the center of the entablature. The top of the entablature is decorated with coat of arms scattered with ermines.

This beautiful fireback was cast in the 20th century. Shaped as a square, it is adorned with a medallion in an acanthus leaves arabesques surrounding. On the center of the medallion, we can recognize a scene of the Old Testament depicting the episode of the sacrifice of Isaac. This Bible episode tells how God wanted to try the loyalty of Abraham by asking him to sacrifice his only son before His angel stops him.

The Louis XVI style quotes Greek Antiquity mixed with nature, as seen on the frieze of the band. This frieze is a Greek frieze, symmetrical, with a wave motif. The waves are interspersed with acanthus leaves, which fill the rest of the space. Above the band, a frieze of ovals surrounds the fireplace. The console part of the leg features a recurring motif of the Louis XVI style, a floral motif composed of acanthus leaves and a central bud. The rest of the leg is a free-standing Corinthian column, recognizable by the two rows of acanthus leaves on the capital. The rest of the column is fluted and tapered, a recurring motif in the Louis XVI style. From the middle of the column, the flutes are filled in with field grasses, then with cylinders, a blend of antique and nature. Finally, at the bottom of the column, leaves surround the column as it rises vertically.
