Charles Stanislas MATIFAT, the elephant clock an oriental model presented at the Crystal Palace in 1851

Emblematic of the creations of Charles Stanislas Matifat, this spectacular clock demonstrates an oriental inspiration. Evoking the royal architecture of the Thousand and One Nights, mixing gold and colors, it is characterized by its two elephants adorning the base. The model of this rich and precious clock was presented at the first Universal Exhibition, organized in London in 1851. It was exhibited on the Matifat stand at the prestigious Crystal Palace. On this occasion, Matifat was rewarded with a 2nd Class medal. Charles Stanislas Matifat was far from unknown. Founder of a factory and a store of decorative bronzes in 1820, he enjoyed a great reputation. His talents were praised in the press, as well as by the French commission for the 1851 Exhibition. “Mr. Matifat worked hard to find new, varied and elegant forms. This intelligent manufacturer with delicate taste takes as much care in the execution as in the choice of models.” At this time, Matifat invented a process of vitreous enamel on bronze, which allowed him to create decorations of great finesse. Charles Stanislas Matifat presented his creations at other international or universal exhibitions, always elegant, graceful and of great delicacy of execution.
