This pair of kerosene lamps were made in the last quarter of the 19th century in faience and bronze mounted.On each lamps a parakeets sitting on an orchid is represented on a green background with flowers, they are different on each lamps. The top and the base are ornemanted with geometricals motifs on a purple background. The handles are enamelled with stylized red flowers on a yellow background and blue frame.The lamps rests on an openwork bronze mount. The glass globes were made posteriorly.

Baccarat, Pair of vases with wading birds, circa 1880

This pair of opaline vases with Japonisant decoration was executed by the Baccarat crystal works around 1880. Throughout the nineteenth century, the French crystal manufactory demonstrated its excellence through its technical innovations, unveiled on the occasion of the Universal Exhibitions. At that time, the renown of the crystal works was such that it set the standard for other manufactories, both technically and aesthetically. Opaline is a tinted glass crystal whose milky or opaque appearance is close to that of the precious stone (opal). Originally, the effect was achieved by adding bone ash and horn; however, the technical advances of the nineteenth century made it possible to obtain more regular and consistent results by substituting the original ingredients with stable compounds derived from tin dioxide. The decoration of these baluster vases is of outstanding quality of execution and attests to the favour enjoyed by Japanese arts in France during the last third of the nineteenth century. The effectiveness of the composition – which leaves a significant place to empty space – is inspired by Japanese prints: the decoration depicts two pairs of wading birds in a summarily brushed marsh landscape, perched on a strip of land enhanced with green enamel and vegetation. A sun and branches of cherry blossom adorn the upper registers. The palette, restricted to three colours, highlights the whiteness and translucency of the opaline. The neck is adorned with an elegant frieze of gilded rinceaux, and the lip – as well as the outlines and details – is enhanced with gold.

DAUM brothers, Vase with a Rampant Lion, circa 1893

This lion vase was made by the Daum glassworks. This is a model that was presented at the Universal Exhibition which took place in Chicago in 1893, without a vermeil base. Founded in Nancy in 1878 by Jean Daum, the Daum glassworks was quickly taken over by his sons, Auguste and Antonin. From that moment on, increasingly technically complex creations were designed there. A so-called “rampant” lion in red agathe style, enhanced with gold, stands out against a red granite background, revealing in places a second layer of green glass. The back of the vase is entirely open onto this second green granite layer, decorated with decorations in an inverted chevron and evoking heraldry. The neck of the vase has the same treatment as the lion. Its base is vermeil (gilded silver). The vase is signed “Daum / Nancy / ☨”, under the base. The play of layers, colors and rendering of materials make this vase a fine example of the excellence of Daum glassware in the last years of the 19th century. Another example of this vase went on sale at Tajan in 2015. This one has slight variations in the hollowing of the glass. The green colored glass layer shows through more around the leonine figure.

Pair of columns with oak leaves in carved wood and stucco, late 19th century

This pair of columns in resinous wood with stucco decorations was executed in the late 19th century. The columns are fluted and grooved. The grooving, first solid, then in sculpted stucco in the form of pendant flowers, rise one on two at two different heights. At the top, the columns are adorned at four points with oak leaves and acorns hanging from their tops.

Large Napoleon III-style gilded trumeau with laurel garland

This large Napoleon III-style gilded overmantel is remarkable for the large garland that spills over the mirror and intertwines in the overmantel. The garland is made of laurel leaves, which are found at the top of the overmantel next to the central motif. The central motif is that of a coat of arms, from which cut leather and ribbons emerge. The overmantel has simple and rectilinear shapes that feature rounded inner corners, contrasting with the outer corners that protrude from the rectangular structure. Throughout the frame of the overmantel, the same motifs are repeated, notably that of the pearls. The use of laurel leaves, reminiscent of Greek Antiquity, and the use of pearls and ribbons are reminiscent of the Louis XVI style, a style used in the Napoleon III style initiated by Empress Eugénie.

Jules VIEILLARD – “Chien de Fô” Polychrome Faience Clock

This unique hexagonal clock in polychrome glazed faience was produced by the workshops of Jules Vieillard in Bordeaux. The body is richly decorated with floral motifs in vibrant turquoise and cobalt blue enamels. The central dial, framed by a copper bezel, features stylized numerals and a matching floral medallion at its center. The sides are adorned with sculpted handles in the form of fantastical creatures inspired by Asian mythology. The top is surmounted by a Fo dog, a traditional Chinese symbol of protection. The back of the clock is pierced with a floral motif, designed to allow sound from the internal mechanism to resonate outward. The underside bears the marks of the Vieillard manufactory and model numbers. A fine example of 19th-century French faience with pronounced Far Eastern decorative influences.
