Mahogany fireplace mantel and trumeau

Napoleon III mahogany wood chimney piece and red marble fireplace mantel with full cast iron insert. Beautifully carved, the main feature of the mantel decoration are the bowed greyhound heads on each side. The overmantel egg-and-dart frame is flanked by pilasters topped with capitals decorated with horns of abundance. The hearth is framed by a Red Languedoc marble mantel, and the large three panel cast iron insert represents the same themes of greyhounds and horns of abundance surrounding a French royal crowned coat of arms. The two side panels are covered with a pattern of ermine spots.

Beautiful fireback from the 16th century with fretwork contours. Under the central arch adorned with a leonine mask, two figures disguised as Mars and Venus are entwined. They are part of an architectural construction composed of a facade rhythmed with canephoric terms and crowned with a triangular pediment. The plaque bears the coat of arms of Germain Du Val, notary and secretary to the king from 1508 to 1533, Sieur du Mesnil en Vendômois, of Fontenay-en-Parisis, Bonneuil-les-Eaux, Lawarde-Mauger and La Hérelle. He was church warden of the church of Saint-Eustache in Paris. He died before 1641.

The trumeau with the top curved shows a framing painted in gold composed of a frieze with geometrical motifs and surmounted by a beautiful cartouche from where are escaping garlands of flowers and fruits. This mirror is also set on a painted in white decor reminding of a classical architecture with four fluted pilasters.
