Origin:
18th century. The basin from the 20th century.
Status:
In good condition. Some small restorations and light wear of the time.
Beautiful and rare carved stone wall fountain made in the 18th century. The base face a rock pile in trompe-l'oeil on which rest three dolphins. These support the large gadrooned basin made during the 20th century. The upper part is sculpted in low-relief decorated with a Green Man and large acanthus leaves.
The mascaron is adorned with a small lead gargoyle.
The leafy man mask, also called "Green Man" especially in English speaking countries, is a popular ornament since the Middle Ages, particularly in the Romanesque architecture. This setting is similar to the iconography of Sylvanus, tutelary Roman God of the forests.
The decor of this fountain is also closer to the grotesque art because of figurative elements of rock and the use of the human mask.
