This gorgeous Louis XVI style mantel was carved in Black Belgium marble. The straight lines and dark color combine for a piece of a rare and sober elegance, animated by a very refined décor. The jambs are adorned with molded flutes embedded with flames rising up to panels. Each panel encloses a ribbon garnished with flowers, which show the extreme care given to the quality of sculpture: each flower is of a different species and is carved with different techniques, low relief or high relief. The entablature is adorned with a panel portraying putti playing with diverse tools – mainly astrological ones. Two molded panels flank this centerpiece, and at either end of the entablature are rosettes of foliage and budding flowers. A large cornice crowns the whole composition.
