This antique mantel in the Louis XV style known as “Pompadour” was carved out of pink Enjugerais marble. As in this example, Pompadour mantles often have canted jambs, and a slightly curved entablature and shelf. This model is called “a gorges” or “a panneaux” : on the jambs and entablature, oblong molded panels are carved on either side of the central circular medallion features.
Pink Enjugerais marble is similar to Sarrancolin marble. Used in furniture and mantels since the early 18th century, the quarries are now closed.
This fireplace is sold without any insert nor marble floor but they can be made to order.
