The full curved lines of this mantel are characteristic of the late Louis XIV style that appeared towards the end of the King’s reign, a period when design became more fluid and ornate. The large rounded molding below the entablature mantel refers to the Bolection mantel model. However here the jambs and entablature are distinct elements. The molding stops above the jambs to form capitals. The upper parts of the jambs are adorned with corbels, while below rise filleted flutes. These much fuller curves foretell the upcoming Louis XV productions. The entablature is garnished with spandrels in relief, another element that is characteristic of the style. This beautiful antique Louis XIV style mantel was produced in the 19th century.
