Classical iconography of the goddess Hygieia gave birth to the symbol of the Bowl of Hygiena. In Greek mythology, Hygiena, daughter of the god of medicine Asclepius, was the goddess of health and cleanliness and sanitation. Her name is the source of the word "hygiene". One of her principal attributes was a snake drinking from a bowl of water that she carried. Here the bowl is full of flames, which both refers to the hygienist theories of the 19th century that evoked purification by fire and to the fireback’s use itself. In France, the symbol of the Bowl of Hygiena was chosen to represent pharmacists since 1942. Here the Bowl is framed by pillars covered with curlicue foliage and pinecones and grapes vines.
