Beautiful antique Louis XIV style cast iron fireback from the 18th century. Almost square,with slanted top corners, the front is adorned with a shield bearing a coat of arms crowned with a high relief helmet feature, surrounded by scrolled acanthus leaves. The shield is made up of three crabs, two lions, a whale, and one fleur de lys, accompanied by three stars. This last coat of arms are from the family of Brétel de Grémonville, a French family from the 17th century.
