Monumental Fireplace with Clock – Musical Putti
Carved Carrara marble, Napoleon III period
France, circa 1860
This impressive white Carrara marble fireplace is crowned with a domed pediment featuring an allegorical scene of two musician putti in high relief, framing a central clock with a gilded dial.
The ensemble is richly carved with vegetal garlands, scrolled acanthus leaves, rosettes, and classic ornamental motifs. The frieze is bordered by classical mouldings and rests on vertical jambs decorated with floral drops and foliage.
The original clock dial is in gilt bronze with enamelled Roman numerals and is set into a finely sculpted lion’s head.
