Important 18th-century cast iron fireback, decorated at its center with a coat of arms attributed to the Chevron-Villette family, an ancient noble family of Savoy.
The shield displays a chevron charged with a second chevron, accompanied by three rampant lions, two in chief and one in base, the two upper lions facing one another. This distinctive composition corresponds to the known arms of the Chevron-Villette family.
The shield, surmounted by a crown, is flanked by two imposing rampant lions acting as supporters. The whole composition is set within a richly architectural frame, decorated with scrolls, volutes and foliate motifs.
The dynamic outline of the fireback and the richness of its ornamentation are characteristic of 18th-century decorative taste. This important fireback is a remarkable example of heraldic cast ironwork, combining the arms of an ancient Savoyard family with a particularly sculptural and monumental composition.
